Anthony is a leading Australian conductor, pianist, and composer. His international credits span concerts, theatre, television, and radio.

Anthony is currently Musical Director of the 2024 national tour of Chicago. He was recently Musical Director for Opera Australia’s acclaimed production of The Phantom of the Opera, the best-selling show of all time at both the Sydney Opera House and Arts Centre Melbourne, for which he won the 2023 Green Room Award for Musical Direction of a commercial musical. Critics hailed that “nothing thrills more than the music, with conductor Anthony Barnhill on board to coax a commanding richness from the orchestra” [The Guardian].

Anthony has a long association with West Side Story. For the 2019 internation tour he conducted performances at renowned opera houses around the world, such as the Dresden and Berlin State Opera. His involvement with the show continued, music supervising the 2021 Perth and Brisbane seasons, and conducting performances of the 2024 Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour production.

Anthony was Musical Supervisor and orchestrator for the premiere production of Midnight: The Cinderella Musical. As Musical Director for Australian International Productions, Anthony led concert performances in twelve cities throughout China. Anthony has performed with a range of artists including American popstar Mario, Tina Arena, Anthony Warlow, Lucy Durack, James Morrison, Lea Salonga, Rhonda Burchmore, Josh Piterman, and Dame Edna Everage.

Anthony studied at Monash University, achieving the university’s highest performance result in each year of study. In 2017, he was winner of the prestigious Rob Guest Endowment Musician Award.
